Description
The Castello del Buonconsiglio is one of the most notable castles in the Trentino-South Tyrol region and is located in the Italian city of Trento. It was constructed in the 12th century and served as the residence for the Prince-Bishops of Trento until 1796. Presently, it houses a museum that provides a captivating glimpse into the local history and culture.
The Buonconsiglio Castle sits atop an elevation amidst the city of Trento and comprises multiple buildings, each erected in distinct architectural styles by the Prince-Bishops over centuries. When visiting, you have the opportunity to explore the castle's interior, replete with meticulously restored chambers. The oldest section of the castle is the Torre Aquila, commonly known as the "Eagle Tower," which was erected in the 13th century. An exceptional highlight within is the collection of frescoes known as the "Cycle of the Months". These 15th-century wall paintings depict life at the court of the Prince-Bishops and possess immense artistic and historical significance. Though there is a nominal fee for accessing this part of the castle, it is an experience not to be missed. Additionally, from that era, there is another tower, the Castle keep or "August Tower."
You can also explore the "Palazzo Magno", a magnificent Renaissance-style edifice constructed in the 16th century. Adorned with intricate frescoes, the building houses an impressive painting collection. Accessible areas include the Audience Hall, the Great Hall, the Mirror Hall, the library, and the chapel. Of particular note is Bishop's Hall, where wall paintings reflect eight centuries of history. Within the museum, you will find displays of ancient weaponry, historical furniture, religious artefacts, and numerous other intriguing objects from the era. You have the choice to independently and interactively explore the museum or, for a small additional fee, join a public guided tour.
A well-kept secret is to visit during rose bloom, as the castle features an Italian garden. This garden, as well as the cafeteria, can be enjoyed without charge. From the castle's battlements, you can enjoy panoramic views of the picturesque alleys of the old town, the majestic Dolomites, and the surrounding mountains of the Adige Valley.
How to get there
