Who would have thought you could ride a real wave right in the middle of the Austrian Alps? The Silvretta Therme in Ischgl is making it a reality. With its newly opened wave simulator, the spa is blending mountain views with genuine surf vibes — a first for the entire Tyrol region. Today we're taking a closer look at this surfing attraction, perched 1,400 meters above sea level.
From Ice Rink to Wave Pool
Pretty clever idea, really: the new wave-surfing setup in Ischgl makes use of space that would otherwise just sit empty for half the year. On Level 1 of the spa — the same spot where ice skaters glide around in winter — summer now turns it into a stage for dynamic water-sports action. Right on schedule for the start of the season on June 27, 2026, the area was transformed into a wave pool designed for beginners and seasoned surfers alike.
That makes the Silvretta Therme the first — and so far only — place in all of Tyrol where you can ride an artificial wave, giving the region a genuine claim to fame.
"With the surf wave, we're bringing the surfing trend to the mountains and opening it up to a wide audience. This facility is one-of-a-kind in Tyrol, and it gives us another great summer experience to offer the region and our guests," says Christine Senn, head of the Silvretta Therme Ischgl.
Surf, Watch, Enjoy

A surf session lasts 30 minutes and costs 18 euros per person. Up to five guests share the setup at a time, taking turns on the wave so everyone gets a fair shot at riding it. Tickets are available online through the Silvretta Therme Ischgl ticket shop, or you can simply grab one at the box office on-site.
If you'd rather watch than ride, the Ice Bar right next to the wave pool has you covered. In summer, it turns into a relaxed hangout spot for spectators and anyone looking to take a breather between waves. Light snacks and refreshing drinks round out the experience — whether you need a quick pick-me-up or just want to wind down after a day at the spa.
The Silvretta Therme at a Glance

The new surf wave is the latest highlight at a spa that was already one of Tyrol's most impressive even before this addition. Spread across more than 1,000 square meters of water area, guests can enjoy a sprawling panoramic pool landscape featuring a 25-meter lap pool, an adventure pool, a whirlpool tower, a salt grotto, and an outdoor pool with a pool bar offering views of the Pardatschgrat peak.
For those who prefer to slow things down, the sauna area — spanning over 1,500 square meters — offers an impressive range of options: the panoramic sauna (one of Austria's largest), a mountain herb sauna, a smuggler-themed "customs hut" sauna, an alpine rose steam bath, and a snow grotto. Hourly steam infusion shows, including some led by reigning national champion Bernie Becht, add even more to the experience.
Rounding things out is a private spa, professional massage treatments, a cryotherapy cold chamber, and a modern fitness area. There's something for every taste on the food side too, from the trattoria to the grill lounge to the stylish pool bar. All told, the Silvretta Therme Ischgl is far more than your average indoor pool — it's an alpine wellness and sports destination that's just gained another standout chapter with its new wave.
