Description
At the end of 2025, the world's largest museum dedicated to Egyptian civilisation opened its doors. For the first time, exhibits from Tutankhamun's tomb that outsiders have never seen before are on display. You can find the pieces in the ‘King Tut Gallery’, which covers 7,000 square metres and displays the collection of the Golden Pharaoh from the 18th Dynasty.
Other highlights include the ‘Great Staircase’, a gallery with 74 statues and art objects from ancient Egypt, and the obelisk of King Ramses, which welcomes visitors in the auditorium. A total of 55,137 exhibits from Egyptian museums and excavation sites were brought to the Grand Egyptian Museum to create a centre for ancient Egyptian history. The view of the Pyramids of Giza makes you feel as if you have travelled back in time.
The architecturally stylish museum complex also includes a children's museum, a museum for solar boats, a centre for arts and crafts, and a conservation and convention centre. Several restaurants and cafés cater to visitors' culinary needs. The museum is connected to the Pyramids of Giza by a footpath.
Historical Information
After around twenty years of construction, the time had finally come – the Grand Egyptian Museum opened its doors to visitors at the end of 2025. The foundation stone was laid back in 2002 and the design of the building was put out to tender in a global architectural competition. The winner was the Irish architectural firm Heneghan/Peng, which then completed the design for the stylish building.
The museum captivates visitors with its exhibits from ancient Egyptian history while promoting research and innovation in the field of Egyptian cultural heritage. Its location right next to the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx makes it possible to visit Cairo's most famous sights in a single day.
