The Montparnasse skyscraper
The Tour Montparnasse is a 689 ft (210 m) high tower in Paris' city district Montparnasse and contains offices. With its 59 floors, the building is higher than the Eiffel Tower which is quite extraordinary. It has a viewing platform that no other building offers at that height in Paris.
The viewing platform
The viewing platform is located on the 56th floor of the building. The fastest lift in Europe takes you up within 38 seconds. Once you're on top, you have the chance to buy souvenirs or just relax in the café. From here you have a wonderful panorama view on the entire city, which makes the Tour Montparnasse the hot spot among Parisian buildings. It just offers the best view on the city! From atop the building, you may view all sights of Paris including the business quarter “La Défense”.
The Tour Montparnasse was built in the period between 1969 and 1973 by architect Roger Saubot. Nowadays, it ranges among the city's buildings offering most workplaces in Paris. Numerous enterprises have settled here, employing around 5.000 people.
It's noteworthy that Parisians themselves like to call Tour Montparnasse “the ugliest building in Paris and the entire world”. Many Parisians still don't agree with this very edifice being the tallest building of their town.
How to get there
By public transport
As for most sights in Paris, it is not recommendable to visit Tour Montparnasse by car. Instead, you should visit the sight comfortably using the city's fantastic public transport system. You only need to hop on one of the following metro lines: 4, 12, 6 or 13 and get off at either “Gare Montparnasse” or “Montparnasse Bienvenue” station. From there you can easily reach the building on foot. And don't worry, you cannot possibly miss it due to its height.
