Description

Deep in southern Lower Saxony, one of northern Germany’s most fascinating natural monuments emerges: the Rhume Spring. As one of the largest and most water-rich karst springs in Europe, it captivates with its shimmering turquoise waters, geological significance, and mythical past.

From a spring pool measuring about 30 meters long and 20 meters wide, between 900 and 5,500 liters of crystal-clear water bubble to the surface every second – a true natural phenomenon. The temperature remains a constant eight to ninedegrees Celsius all year round, which means the spring never freezes, even in winter. A well-maintained circular path leads around the vibrant turquoise source and can be easily completed in just a few minutes. With a bit of luck, you might spot kingfishers, dippers, or wild ducks. Even trout and grayling thrive in the cool, clear waters.

Underground Water Network

What makes the Rhume Spring truly fascinating lies underground: The water comes mainly from the Harz Mountains, where rivers like the Oder, Sieber, and Beber seep into the porous karst rock. Beneath the surface, the water travels through a vast network of hollow chambers and crevices – eventually emerging about 60 meters lower at the spring. A Bunter Sandstone ridge blocks its flow and forces it back above ground, carrying with it large quantities of gypsum and limestone each day. It’s a silent but powerful force of nature.

A treasure for Flora, Fauna and Researchers

The Rhume Spring is a refuge for rare species and a perfect place for nature observation. Informational panels around the spring highlight local flora and fauna. For those who want to learn more, the Gut Herbigshagen Nature Experience Center, run by the Heinz Sielmann Foundation, is just 10 kilometers away and offers additional insight.

Historical Information

Legend tells of the water nymph Rhuma, who fell deeply in love with the giant Romar. Banished by her father, she fled through the depths of the earth, reemerging at the very spot of today’s spring in a stream of water. To this day, the story lives on: every two years, the village of Rhumspringe crowns a local girl as the "Nixe Rhuma" to honor the tale.

The spring also has a long cultural history: Archaeological finds show that it was used as a place of worship as early as the Stone Age. Remnants of vessels, tools, and coins testify to a connection between humans and this source of life that spans thousands of years.

How to get there

The Rhume Spring is located in southern Lower Saxony, just a short walk northeast of the village of Rhumspringe. Nestled between Duderstadt and Herzberg am Harz, it's only about 15 kilometers from the famous Harz National Park. The spring is easily accessible by both car and public transport.

By car: The quickest route is via B247, which runs between Göttingen and Nordhausen. From the turnoff at Rhumspringe, it's just a few more minutes to the well-signposted parking lot near the spring. A short, flat footpath (approx. 200 meters) leads straight to the glowing turquoise pool.

By public transport: Buses on the VLG line 450 run regularly from Göttingen and Herzberg am Harz to Rhumspringe Ortsmitte. From there, it’s about a 10-minute walk to the spring.
