Description

Surrounded by gentle hills and picturesque landscapes lies one of the most beautiful country palaces in Saxony: Rammenau Baroque Palace. With its magnificently decorated rooms, idyllic park grounds, and fascinating insights into the life of the rural nobility, it offers an unforgettable destination for lovers of culture and history.
Even from the outside, Rammenau Palace enchants with its harmonious architecture and its location at the edge of the Lusatian Highlands. But its full splendor is only revealed inside: The palace impresses with original rooms from the Baroque and Classical periods, including the Chinese Room, the Bird and Peacock Rooms, and the mythologically themed Devil’s Room. On the bel étage, fine wall paintings meet elegant furnishings – offering a stylish glimpse into 18th- and 19th-century domestic culture.
A special highlight is the new permanent exhibition "Cow Barn and Silver Plate", which from summer 2025 will bring the lives of the noble residents and their servants to life.
Those who wish to delve even deeper into the history of the palace can take part in one of the regularly offered guided tours. The event program is also worth seeing: concerts in the Hall of Mirrors, culinary events, markets, and festivals continually present the palace in a new light.
Historical Information

The origins of the palace go back to the year 1717, when Ernst Ferdinand von Knoch, chamberlain to Augustus the Strong, acquired the old manor of Rammenau and began construction of a representative Baroque palace. After running into financial difficulties, the von Hoffmann family took over the estate and completed the complex.
Under Johann Centurius von Hofmannsegg, the garden was transformed into a landscaped park. Over the centuries, the estate changed hands several times. In the 20th century, the palace served as a military hospital and later as a study center. Comprehensive restoration began only in the 1990s, and today the palace is owned by the Free State of Saxony.
How to get there

Rammenau Palace is idyllically located on the edge of the Lusatian Highlands, about 20 kilometers west of Bautzen and around an hour’s drive from Dresden. You can easily reach the palace by car via the A4 – either by exiting at Ohorn or Burkau. Paid parking is available directly at the site.
The palace is also easily accessible by public transport: From Dresden, take the train to Bischofswerda. From there, a bus runs to the stop "Rammenau Schloss", from which it’s just a short walk to the Baroque entrance. The palace grounds themselves are accessible with limited mobility.
