Perched at an altitude of 2,344 meters in the Tux Alps, the Kellerjoch Chapel is considered one of the most famous landmarks of the Silver Region Karwendel.

Located just above the top station of the Kellerjoch cable car, it has been a destination for pilgrims, hikers, and nature lovers for decades, all drawn by the breathtaking panoramic views of the Inn Valley and the Zillertal Alps. This small sacred building is not only architecturally remarkable, but also offers a unique place of peace amid the alpine silence.

Hiking and Reflection in the Tux Alps

The ascent to the Kellerjoch Chapel is especially popular in summer. Many hikes start at the top station of the Kellerjoch cable car, from where the summit can be reached in about 45 minutes. The trail leads along well-maintained paths with breathtaking views of the Karwendel Mountains and the surrounding valleys. On clear days, the view extends as far as the Zugspitze, making this hike one of the most impressive panoramic experiences in Tyrol.

The chapel is a place of peace and contemplation, attracting many visitors also because of its historical significance. As early as the 19th century, miners built the first small chapel here to pray for protection while working and hiking in the mountains. Today, the lovingly restored building belongs to the parish of Schwaz.

Traditional Event: The Kellerjoch Mass

A special event that attracts numerous worshippers and visitors every year is the mountain mass at the Kellerjoch Chapel, usually held in July or August. On this day, locals, hiking groups, and brass bands gather on the summit to celebrate mass under the open sky. The event is one of Tyrol’s oldest mountain church festivals, blending living tradition with the experience of the alpine landscape. Despite the high altitude, the atmosphere is warm, communal, and deeply reverent, an experience that leaves a lasting impression on all who attend.

Recommendation: Those wishing to experience the Kellerjoch Chapel in peace should visit early in the morning or in the evening. The sunrise over the Zillertal Alps is particularly stunning from here, and with a bit of luck, you may even witness the rare alpine glow. Photography enthusiasts will find exceptional subjects at the chapel, from rugged rocks and the summit cross to sweeping mountain vistas.

Historical Information

The history of the Kellerjoch Chapel dates back to 1888, when miners from Schwaz and the surrounding area first decided to build a shelter for their prayers. The original structure was made of wood and local stone and was exposed to the elements for decades. Over time, several renovations shaped the chapel’s distinctive appearance.

After severe winters and storm damage, the chapel was completely rebuilt in 1956, taking on its present form with a small bell tower and stone exterior walls. Since then, it has become a popular destination not only for religious pilgrimages but also for visitors interested in alpine architecture and local mountain culture. Today, the chapel is a listed monument and is considered one of the highest-altitude ecclesiastical buildings in Tyrol.
