Description & Details
Nestled at the base of Gellért Hill on the Buda side of the Danube, the Gellért Thermal Bath is one of Europe’s most iconic spa experiences. With its magnificent Art Nouveau architecture, legendary healing waters, and a timeless atmosphere, it’s the perfect destination for anyone seeking relaxation, history, and architectural beauty all in one.
The Gellért Bath draws from thermal springs that were described as “miraculous” as early as the 15th century. The waters bubbling up from Gellért Hill are known to reduce inflammation and support relief from joint problems, spinal issues, and circulatory disorders.
Bathing in Belle Époque Elegance
From the moment you step into the grand main hall, it’s clear: bathing here is not routine – it’s an experience. Intricate mosaics, colorful Zsolnay tiles, stained-glass windows, and delicate columns make the Gellért Bath one of the most photogenic spots in Budapest. The glass-roofed swimming hall is the centerpiece, radiating historic charm – and on sunny days, the roof even opens to let in fresh air and natural light.
The bath complex features a range of indoor and outdoor pools, with water temperatures between 26 and 40 °C. Among them are six warm thermal pools (34 °C to 40 °C), a traditional swimming pool (27 °C – swim caps required), and a legendary outdoor wave pool (26 - 29 °C, operating in the summer season). Outside, a jacuzzi-style pool and a shallow children’s pool add to the fun.
Saunas
Those who like it hot will love the spacious sauna and steam areas: five dry saunas ranging from 50 to 80 °C and two steam baths at 43 °C offer plenty of variety. Afterwards, you can cool off in a refreshing plunge pool or one of the cold-water zones. The combination of heat, water, and serenity offers deep rejuvenation – for both body and mind.

Wellness & Beauty
In addition to therapeutic treatments, the Gellért Bath offers a wide range of wellness massages – from aromatic relaxation massages (20 or 45 minutes) to invigorating treatments that stimulate circulation and soothe tired muscles. Looking for something extra special? Guests can even book a private bath experience, complete with personal service, a fruit basket, and a glass of Prosecco.
How to get there
The Gellért Bath enjoys a prime location on the western bank of the Danube in the Buda district, just beneath Gellért Hill and right at the foot of Liberty Bridge. It’s easily reached via tram lines 47 and 49, which stop directly at Gellért tér – just a short walk from the entrance. Bus lines 7, 133E, and 107 also provide reliable connections. If you’re arriving via the metro, it’s about a 5-minute walk from Fővám tér station (M4), crossing the bridge on foot.
Arriving by car is also possible, though parking near the bath can be tricky. Paid street parking is available in the side roads, and there’s a public parking garage at the BME University, roughly a 5-minute walk away.
