High above the Rhine, the cable car in Koblenz combines history, technology, and an unforgettable panorama into an experience that captivates visitors. The ride to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is one of the city’s most spectacular attractions, offering breathtaking views of the Deutsches Eck, the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, the Liebfrauenkirche in the old town, and the mighty equestrian statue of Emperor William I, proudly overlooking the river junction.

Glide with a panoramic view to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

During the ride in one of the modern panoramic gondolas, a spectacular view unfolds over the city, the Rhine, and the Moselle Valley. Especially impressive is the view of the Deutsches Eck with the equestrian statue of Emperor William I, which appears particularly majestic from a bird’s-eye perspective. Here, where the two rivers meet, visitors can experience the city from an entirely new angle. Within just a few minutes, the cable car glides directly up to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, one of the largest preserved fortresses in Europe. Once at the top, visitors can stroll through the historic walls, explore exhibitions, or enjoy sweeping views over the Middle Rhine Valley from the viewing terraces. In summer, the fortress grounds regularly become a stage for concerts and open-air events, while in winter, during the popular Christmas Garden Koblenz, the site transforms into a sparkling landscape of lights.

Recommendation: There are combination tickets available that include both the cable car ride and entry to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. Perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy the full experience of breathtaking views, history, and culture.

A technical masterpiece with history

The Koblenz cable car was built as a special feature for the 2011 Federal Garden Show and opened in June 2010. Originally planned as a temporary attraction, it quickly became a permanent landmark of the city.

Built by the Austrian cable car specialist Doppelmayr, it connects the Rhine promenades near the Basilica of St. Castor with Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. Covering a distance of nearly 900 meters, it crosses the Rhine in just four minutes. With a transport capacity of 7,600 people per hour, it is not only the most powerful but also the most modern cable car in Germany. An impressive example of engineering excellence and sustainability in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

How to get there

The valley station of the Koblenz Cable Car is located on the Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer, just a few minutes’ walk from the Deutsches Eck and St. Kastor Basilica. Thanks to its central location, it is easily accessible both on foot and by public transport.

By car: Several parking options are available nearby, including the Rhein-Mosel-Halle parking garage and public parking spaces along the Rhine promenade. From there, it’s only a short walk to the valley station.

By public transport: From Koblenz Central Station, visitors can take bus lines 1 or 5 to the stop “Deutsches Eck / Basilika St. Kastor.” From there, it’s just about 200 meters to the cable car.

Accessibility: Both the valley station and the mountain station are fully accessible. All cabins are suitable for wheelchair users and strollers, making the ride comfortable for families and visitors with limited mobility.

On foot or by bike: Those exploring the city on foot can reach the valley station via a short walk through the old town. Bicycles can also be taken into the cabins without any problem, ideal for cyclists traveling along the Rhine or Moselle cycle paths, who can use the cable car as a convenient connection across the river.
