Historic Landmark with Baroque Splendor in the Old Town

The Liebfrauenkirche, which translates to Church of Our Lady, is one of the most significant historical buildings in Koblenz's old town. With its two baroque onion-shaped towers, each rising to about 98.5 meters, it dominates the city shape and is among the oldest churches in the Middle Rhine region. The church stands on a small hill, the highest point of the old town, and is visible from afar.

Inside, the Liebfrauenkirche combines Romanesque foundations with Gothic and Baroque elements that were added over the centuries. High vaulted ceilings, intricately decorated altars, and colorful stained-glass windows create an impressive ad contemplative atmosphere. Particularly noteworthy is the statue of the Virgin Mary, "Our Lady", which gave the church its name. From Jesuitenplatz, visitor have a clear view of the facade and its two towers, where the architectural details of the church are especially well appreciated.

The origins of the Liebfrauenkirche date back to the 5th century, when an early Christian basilica was built on site. In the 12th century, the present Romanesque church was constructed, which was expanded and remodeled several times over the centuries. Gothic elements were added in the late Middle Ages, and the baroque tower domes followed in the 17th century.

In the Middle Ages, the Liebfrauenkirche served as the main parish church of the city and was an important spiritual center. During World War II. it was almost completely destroyed. However, the two towers miraculously remained standing, while large parts of the roof and interior collapsed. Today, they are regarded as a symbol of the city's reconstruction and the resilience of Koblenz.

After 1945, a careful reconstruction began, preserving much of the church's historical appearance. Today, it is protected as a monument of the Middle Rhine architecture and remains a central feature of the historic cityscape of Koblenz.

How to get there

The Liebfrauenkirche is located in the center of Koblenz's old town and is easily accessible on foot. It is about a 15-minute walk from the main train station. Parking is available in nearby parking garages, such as "Parkhaus Görresplatz" or the "Löhr-Center".
