Description
Winding between steep forested slopes and tranquil coves, the Upper Lake meanders like a green ribbon through Eifel National Park. Its branching shape, deep green woodlands, and mirror-like surface have earned it the nickname "Amazon of the Eifel".
Located in the Euskirchen district of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Upper Lake is part of the Rur Dam system and serves as the main forebay to the larger Rur Reservoir. Well-marked trails offer access to this diverse landscape of water, woodland, and meadows. Popular routes include the Eifel-Höhen-Route, the Wasserland Route, and various shoreline paths that lead to secluded bays, panoramic viewpoints, and immersive nature experiences. From the banks, visitors enjoy wide, uninterrupted views across the peaceful lake framed by forest – perfect for birdwatching, hiking, and relaxation.
Historical Information
The Rur Dam was completed in 1939 to regulate the river’s water levels, provide drinking water, and generate electricity. The Upper Lake forms the eastern section of the reservoir system and connects to the Urftsee via a tunnel structure.
Together, the Rursee, Upper Lake, and Urft Dam form the Eifel Lakes Plateau, storing over 250 million cubic meters of water and supplying drinking water to around one million people. Two hydroelectric plants produce approximately 46 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. A particular highlight from the early era of energy production is the Art Nouveau-style power station in Heimbach, built in 1904.
