The Rhododendron Park Bremen is located in the Horn-Lehe district and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Spanning around 46 hectares, visitors can explore thousands of rhododendrons and azaleas, a botanical garden, themed gardens, and expansive walking paths.

The Rhododendron Park Bremen, which is freely accessible, is a green oasis that impresses with its botanical diversity and lovingly designed garden areas. Over 46 hectares, a fascinating landscape unfolds with blooming rhododendrons and azaleas, shaded woodlands, tranquil streams, and vast meadows. Nearly 4,000 trees, some over 150 years old, shape the park’s landscape, alongside numerous themed gardens that offer new experiences throughout the year.

The Various Park Areas

The park is divided into several distinct areas: In the Rhododendron Forest, with its old trees and over 80-year-old shrubs, a rich array of blossoms thrives. The Azalea Grove enchants with its colors and fragrance, while the Variety Garden showcases around 1,000 rhododendron cultivars. Additional highlights include a heather garden, a scent garden, a panoramic path, a bonsai garden, and the picturesque Yakushimanum Valley, home to giant sequoia trees, adding to the park's diversity and atmosphere.

A special part of the park is the Botanical Garden, which features around 5,000 plant species from around the world. Here, native wild plants, alpine rarities, medicinal and culinary plants grow, accompanied by a beautifully planted decorative courtyard.

In the heart of the park, the botanika, Bremen’s interactive world of discovery, invites visitors on a journey through tropical greenhouses, a butterfly house, and even a small monkey house. Right next door, Café Bloom offers a relaxing break with a view over the heath landscape.

For families, there are two diverse playgrounds, including an adventure playground with water games, climbing towers, and a modular wooden house. Those interested in deepening their knowledge of plants can take part in various events and expert-led tours that take place throughout the year in the Rhododendron Park.

Tip: The peak blooming period for the rhododendrons is usually in April and May – that's when the park shows its most vibrant colors. A visit during this time is especially recommended.

Historical Information

The Rhododendron Park Bremen originated from an initiative by the German Rhododendron Society, which in 1935 proposed the establishment of a testing garden. The first section of the park was opened as early as 1937. The Botanical Garden, originally founded in 1905 on the Osterdeich, was relocated to Horn in 1936 and was fully established by 1951.

Since 2009, the park has been managed by the Stiftung Bremer Rhododendronpark. In addition, since 2003, it has been part of the global art project INSCRIRE. Along the paths, bronze bands with the 30 articles of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights serve as reminders of central values, making the park also a place for social engagement and reflection.

How to get there
