Description

Ranking among Austria's longest and highest pedestrian suspension bridges, the Holzgau suspension bridge stretches 200 meters in length, 110 meters in height, and one meter in width across the picturesque Höhenbachtal gorge.
Since its construction, numerous hiking trails have been linked together and can be combined into circular routes. In summer, a hike to the Simms waterfall is possible, and there is also a route between the sunny slopes of the Gföllberg and the Schiggenberg. At night, the bridge is lit up with LED lights.
The long-distance hiking trail E5 (Lake Constance to the Adriatic) passes beneath the bridge. The standard stage runs from the Kemptner Hütte across the Holzgau suspension bridge and on to the Memminger Hütte.
Winter opening hours depend on snow conditions. The suspension bridge is free to access.
Historical Information
Raising the Region's Profile
With its dimensions, the bridge ranks among Austria's longest and highest pedestrian suspension bridges. It was opened in March 2012 as a joint project between the Holzgau local tourism association, the municipality of Holzgau, and the Agrargemeinschaft Innerer Aufschlag. The aim of the project was to raise the profile of Holzgau and the Lech Valley among tourists and to increase overnight stays.
Funding the Pedestrian Suspension Bridge
Two thirds of the major project were financed through grants from the state of Tyrol and the European Union. The remaining costs were split, with half covered by the Holzgau local tourism group and a quarter each by the municipality of Holzgau and the Agrargemeinschaft Innerer Aufschlag. Total construction costs came to approximately 650,000 euros.
