Europe's Longest Flyline in the Bavarian Forest
Summer 2026 sees the opening of Europe's longest flyline at Almberg, and it's set to offer a completely new way of experiencing the Bavarian Forest. Gliding almost silently through the trees for nearly 2,000 metres, visitors are carried along a stainless steel rail system in a centrifugal-braked car that ensures a smooth, safe and controlled ride from start to finish.
With a top speed of just 12 km/h and a ride time of around 15 minutes, this is less about thrills and more about taking in the nature around you. The route drops 298 metres in elevation, starting at 1,139 metres above sea level and finishing at 841 metres, with the launch platform sitting 7 metres off the ground and the track ranging between 3 and 8 metres above the forest floor. The entire facility is fully accessible, making it a great experience for people with disabilities and children alike.
Not just flying – there's sliding, swinging and eating too
The flyline is just one part of a brand new summer programme at Almberg. A new four-seater chairlift runs directly from the village centre up to the summit, where a newly built adventure playground awaits families. Running beneath the flyline, a five-kilometre trail winds through the forest, dotted with slides and swings, entertaining for kids and a pleasant stroll for anyone who just wants to enjoy the surroundings.
When it comes to food, the area around Almberg has plenty to offer. Gasthof-Pension Alpe serves up traditional Bavarian dishes with panoramic views across the Bavarian Forest and the Alps, while Hotel Sportalm, housed in the historic old schoolhouse of Mitterfirmiansreut, focuses on fresh, regional ingredients paired with an impressive selection of beers and wines. For something more relaxed, Almberghütte right at the slopes offers solid food at reasonable prices, and Gasthaus Kellhammer is the place to be for a meal with views across the Bohemian Forest. In short: no one's going home hungry after a ride through the treetops.
The grand opening of the flyline takes place on 14 May 2026.
Historical Information
From Ski Resort to World Record
The Almberg in Mitterdorf in the Bavarian Forest has long been known primarily as a winter destination, with modern ski lifts, a junior ski circus and sledging runs nestled in the quiet woodland of the southern Bavarian Forest.
Summer 2026 marks a new chapter: the Freizeitzentrum Mitterfirmiansreut-Philippsreut has made the biggest investment in Mitterdorf's history, transforming Almberg into an attractive year-round destination for families, nature lovers and anyone looking to experience the Bavarian Forest from a whole new angle. The centrepiece of the new summer offering is a genuine world record: the longest flyline Europe's.
How to get there
Mitterdorf, or Mitterfirmiansreut, as the village is officially known, sits in the southern Bavarian Forest right on the Czech border, close to the point where Bavaria and Bohemia meet. The nearest larger town is Freyung, around 15 kilometres away.
From Nuremberg, take the A3 towards Passau, switch to the A92 and then follow the B12 towards Freyung – allow around two hours.
From Munich, head to Passau via the A94 and continue on the B12 towards Freyung, which takes roughly two and a half hours.
From Passau itself, the drive takes about 45 minutes along the B12.
There is a train connection to Freyung, but onward travel from there requires a car or shuttle service, as public transport in the area is limited.
