Description
Tucked away in a secluded valley near Oppenau, the All Saints Waterfalls plunge nearly 90 metres down moss-covered cliffs in seven cascades – one of the most breathtaking natural spectacles in the Black Forest.
From the ruins of the former All Saints Monastery, a narrow trail leads you deep into the wild gorge landscape of the northern Black Forest. The path alongside the waterfalls is as varied as it is scenic: it begins with root-covered, sometimes steep trails lined with wooden railings and continues with numerous steps leading downhill back to the monastery courtyard. At the top, don’t miss the "Engelskanzel" (Angel’s Pulpit) – a spectacular viewpoint offering sweeping views through the gorge.
Along the way, small information panels tell tales of ancient legends and the history of the monastery complex. If you want to dive deeper, consider joining a guided hike with the national park team – these tours run regularly during the season. For the most impressive water flow, plan your visit between spring and autumn.
Historical Information
After the monastery was dissolved in the 19th century, the gorge remained inaccessible for many years. It wasn’t until 1840 that forestry officials, under the direction of Chief Forester Eichrodt from Achern, created the first access route – a narrow trail with ladders that made it possible to explore the falls. Just two years later, funding from the Grand Ducal Court Chamber in Karlsruhe enabled the construction of handrails and stairways, making the trail safer and open to the public.
How to get there
The All Saints Waterfalls are idyllically located in the Rench Valley in the central Black Forest, nestled in a forested side valley above the town of Oppenau. The best starting point for your visit is the free car park at the All Saints monastery ruins – well signposted and located directly above the falls.
If you're travelling by car, follow the signs from Oppenau to "Allerheiligen" or "Klosterruine Allerheiligen". A winding forest road takes you up to the parking area in about ten minutes. From there, the well-maintained and clearly marked trail begins – it's just a short walk to the first cascades.
You can also reach the waterfalls by public transport: take the train via Appenweier and Bad Griesbach to Oppenau. During the summer months, a seasonal hiking bus runs from Oppenau to the monastery ruins. Alternatively, you can hike or cycle the route from Oppenau yourself.
