Description
In the heart of the Fichtelgebirge, orientation becomes an adventure: at the foot of Mount Epprechtstein, the Granite Labyrinth Epprechtstein invites visitors to explore its winding paths. Located on the grounds of a former stonemasonry site, the maze leads you between 180 massive granite blocks.
Hidden in the northern Fichtelgebirge, between Kirchenlamitz and Weißenstadt, lies a unique destination: the Granite Labyrinth Epprechtstein. It is located on the site of a former stonemason's factory – directly on the quarry circular hiking trail, which leads around the 798-meter-high Epprechtstein.
Covering an area of 34 x 34 meters, the labyrinth features five winding paths surrounded by 180 granite blocks. The walk to the center is about 400 meters long. At the very heart of the labyrinth awaits a special highlight: an impressive five-meter-high granite obelisk marking the center point. If you climb the small hill behind the site, you’ll also get a great aerial view of the labyrinth's design – perfect for a memorable photo.
The labyrinth is built entirely from Epprechtstein granite – a true geological "treasure" of the region, which is home to around 20 historic quarries. Nearby, you’ll also find the Epprechtstein Info Center at Vorderes Buchhaus, offering fascinating insights into geology, the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park, and the region’s stonemasonry tradition.
How to get there
The Granite Labyrinth Epprechtstein is located in the northern Fichtelgebirge, right off the road between Weißenstadt and Kirchenlamitz – across from the "Waldschmiede" inn. It’s easily accessible by both car and public transport.
If you’re arriving by car, follow signs to Kirchenlamitz or Weißenstadt, then head toward the parking area at "Vorderes Buchhaus", where the Epprechtstein Info Center is located. From there, it’s just a short walk to the labyrinth.
By public transport, take a regional train to the "Kirchenlamitz Ost" station. From there, it’s a roughly four km walk or bike ride along well-maintained trails to the labyrinth. Alternatively, during the tourist season, a regional hiking bus operates in the area – check with local tourist information centers for current schedules.
