Nestled in the heart of the Swabian Alb, framed by ancient monastery walls and a carefully maintained park, the Große Lauter river begins its journey from a crystal-clear karst spring. From here, it flows for about 44 kilometers through the scenic Lauter Valley, passing romantic castles, quaint villages, and sunlit juniper meadows before joining the Danube.

The Lauter Spring in Offenhausen is both a natural and cultural monument. Fed by five powerful karst springs, the turquoise basin releases a total of around 150 liters of water per second, flowing directly from the Swabian Alb’s underground cave system. Geologically unique: instead of seeping away, the water remains above ground, thanks to the area's volcanic bedrock.

Just a few steps from the source, the young Lauter plunges three meters down through a small historic hydroelectric plant. Decommissioned in 1975 and restored in 2006 by the Offenhausen Hydropower Association, the facility is now open to visitors. Informational panels explain topics such as eco-friendly hydropower, conservation, and local agricultural history.

Visiting the Lauter Spring – On Foot or by Bike

The spring is easy to reach on foot: from Offenhausen’s town center, it’s only a short stroll past green lawns and historic buildings. In spring and summer, the park comes alive with lush greenery and the clear waters create an almost storybook-like atmosphere. Cyclists will also find excellent conditions: well-marked cycling routes pass through Offenhausen – including trails through the scenic Lauter Valley – and are ideal for combining biking and discovery.

The Lauter Spring is located at the northern edge of Offenhausen, beautifully set in a small park right next to the former monastery walls. Offenhausen is part of the Reutlingen district in the Swabian Alb, about 25 kilometers southwest of Ulm. The site is easily accessible by car and public transport.

By Car

Offenhausen can be reached via B465 or B312 from Münsingen, Reutlingen, or Ulm. Parking is available in the village, close to both the spring and the hydropower plant.

By Public Transport

The nearest train station is only about 500 meters away. From there, a short walk through the village takes you directly to the spring. Several bus lines also stop in or near Offenhausen. Bicycle parking is available on site, making it easy to combine a visit with a ride through the Lauter Valley.
