Description
Tucked away off the beaten path and romantically hidden in the forest, the Gütersteiner Waterfall near Bad Urach is a true natural gem in the Swabian Jura.
Unlike the more famous Urach Waterfall, the Gütersteiner Waterfall is quieter, more mysterious, yet no less impressive. In a series of delicate cascades, the water flows over moss-covered tufa terraces into a natural basin.
Living Tufa Rock
This waterfall is not only a scenic highlight but also an important geological site. As the mineral-rich spring water emerges from the rock, it releases calcium carbonate, which settles like a fine veil over the mosses. Over centuries, this process forms new layers of porous tufa stone that can, with a little patience, be watched "growing". These fragile structures provide a unique habitat for many small organisms. To protect this natural wonder, please avoid stepping into or onto the waterfall area.
The Path to the Waterfall
You can reach the Gütersteiner Waterfall via the Maisental valley near Bad Urach. One scenic route leads through the Güterstein stud farm, followed by a narrow zigzag path climbing up to the waterfall. At the top, visitors are rewarded with a peaceful spot featuring a small pond and a chapel. The chapel marks the site of the former Güterstein Monastery, which stood here until the 16th century.
