Description

2,600 metres of alpine coaster fun above Oberammergau
The Alpine Coaster at Kolbensattel offers an exciting mountain adventure for the whole family. A comfortable chairlift ride takes you from the valley station to the top of Kolbensattel, where the 2.6-kilometre descent begins. Along the way, you'll enjoy sweeping views of the valley while covering around 400 metres of vertical drop. When it opened, the Alpine Coaster was the world's first and longest weatherproof alpine coaster equipped with magnetic brakes, a pioneering feature that helped make it well known beyond the region.
Riders can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h, while remaining in full control thanks to dual hand brakes and a modern magnetic braking system. Comfortable seats with supportive backrests make the ride enjoyable from start to finish.
More to discover at Kolbensattel
The Alpine Coaster is just one of several attractions on the mountain. The Kolbensattel Bike Park features around 200 metres of vertical descent, two lifts and six trails catering to riders of all abilities, from flowing beginner routes to more technical challenges.
Families can also enjoy the mountain playground with its wooden marble run, while visitors looking for a different kind of challenge can try the on-site archery course.
Dining at the Kolbensattel Hut
If you're ready for a break after your ride, the Kolbensattel Hut is the perfect place to relax. Located at 1,270 metres above sea level, it overlooks Oberammergau and the surrounding Ammergau Alps.
The menu focuses on hearty regional dishes and traditional Bavarian snacks, with many ingredients sourced locally. One special highlight is the beer, which comes directly from the Benedictine monks of nearby Ettal Abbey.
Historical Information

From ski area to year-round destination
Kolbensattel has long been known as Oberammergau's local ski area, with the Kolben chairlift forming part of the village's winter sports infrastructure for decades. The Alpine Coaster was added to attract visitors during the warmer months and make better use of the mountain outside the ski season.
Together with the bike park, mountain playground and archery course, it has helped transform Kolbensattel into a year-round outdoor destination.
