Description
Just a few minutes from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a breathtaking waterfall experience awaits: the Kuhflucht Waterfalls near Farchant. Carved deep into the rocky cliffs of the Ester Mountains, the water plunges over three distinct tiers, descending a total of around 270 vertical meters.
One of Germany’s Tallest Waterfalls
With a total drop of about 270 meters, the Kuhflucht Waterfalls are among the highest in all of Germany. The water cascades down in multiple stages and is fed by the Kuhflucht Spring, which emerges from the karst rock at around 1,000 meters above sea level.
In summer, the waterfalls impress with thundering spray and a lush green gorge. In winter, the cascades freeze into bizarre ice sculptures. It’s a spectacular year-round destination for hikers, nature lovers, and photographers alike.
Hike to the Waterfalls
The starting point for the hike is right in the center of Farchant, approximately five kilometers north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. From the trailhead at the Loisach parking lot, a well-marked path leads you to the lower falls in about 30 minutes, gaining roughly 100 vertical meters. While the path isn’t suitable for strollers, it’s easily manageable for children with sturdy footwear and a bit of sure-footedness.
For those who want to go further, the trail continues up to the upper Kuhflucht bridge and can be extended into a scenic loop hike through the mountain forest. Plan on spending about 1.5 hours for the full experience –or longer if you’d like to take photos or enjoy a picnic. Several benches and rest areas along the way invite you to pause and take in the surroundings. On hot days, the leafy forest canopy provides welcome shade. In winter, the frozen cascades become a stunning natural art display.
Historical Information
The origin of the name "Kuhflucht" remains somewhat mysterious. One theory traces it to the Latin confluctum, meaning "confluence" – possibly referring to the meeting of the Kuhfluchtbach stream and the Loisach River. Another explanation is more pastoral: in summer, cows would rest along the stream, "flacking down" in the local dialect, which may have given rise to the name "Kuhflucht".
How to get there
